Independent Reading
The BENEFITS of taking time to read fiction text ARE EXTENSIVE!
Students at Dunstan are encouraged to step away from devices and schoolwork to read for enjoyment for at least 20 minutes a day. Extensive research has shown that, since the adoption of everyday use of a phone with Internet access and front-facing camera capabilities, students are no longer building the skills necessary to complete longer more complex text. In addition, mental a person's mental health improves when we reduce our screen time. Just as any athlete must build the skills necessary to compete, humans also need to read daily in order to build the necessary stamina and endurance for reading and understanding increasingly complex text.
