8th GRADE ELECTIVE OPTIONS
Elective class offerings are subject to change and NOT GUARANTEED


Broadcasting Technology (Patriot TV)                       Semester

This course uses modern computer applications and video production techniques to examine and create multiple video presentations and a weekly school-wide broadcast. Students will have the opportunity to work with studio equipment and other media software and hardware. An application process is required for placement into this class.

           

Choir                                       Semester or Full Year

Eighth grade choir is a performance-based class open to any 8th grader at Dunstan. Students who enjoy or are curious about singing in an ensemble are welcome to try choir. Choir members not only sing songs from different historic time periods and genres, they learn a variety of musical content knowledge, including how to read and write music. There is one mandatory concert per semester.

 

Computer Science                             Semester

In Computer Science, students will develop skills in topics such as programming, building websites, animation, 3D modeling, digital photo editing, and multimedia production.

 

Creative Art Ceramics                                    Semester

Students will uncover different ways in creating art through clay. Students will create utilitarian and/or artistic sculptures through various hand-building techniques such as coil, slab, and modeling.

 

Creative Writing                                Semester

This course is designed for a community of writers to experience various genres and styles of creative writing. Frequent writing exercises, often inspired by the readings, will provide students with the opportunity to explore a variety of ideas, structures, styles, and other elements of creative writing in order to develop a unique writing style and hone their craft. Much of class time is devoted to workshop, in which students write, share and respond to each other's writing.

 

Computer Programming                               Semester

 The Computer Programming class introduces students to procedural scripting and object-oriented programming using the languages such as Python, Java, JavaScript, and XHTML. The course builds on many of the main ideas from Computer Science class and presents students with common programming problems, includes computational and critical thinking skills, and engages students in the creative aspects of the field.

 

Destination Imagination                   Semester of Full Year

Creative Problem Solving/Destination ImagiNation will prepare you to be an innovator of the future by combining the arts, sciences, and technology with creativity, teamwork, and problem solving. You will use your leadership, collaboration, and project management skills to create STEAM-based projects designed to prepare you for adulting in the 21st century. Your main project will be presented at least once at a Destination ImagiNation (DI) tournament. It is not required to take this elective to participate in DI, but it is encouraged.

 

Family and Consumer Sciences                     Semester

This course includes managing individual, family, career, and community roles and responsibilities. Students will explore and practice Career Exploration, Foods/Nutrition, Personal Development and Management, Consumer Literacy through advertising, and Technical Reading/Production Standards/Sewing.

 

Lifetime Fitness                                  Semester

Students will develop an understanding of personal wellness through current fitness information and individual fitness activities such as: cardio activities and weight lifting.

 

Orchestra                                           Full Year

This orchestra is a performance-oriented ensemble that is open to students who have had two or more years' experience in playing a stringed instrument and have a working knowledge of more advanced concepts such as shifting and vibrato. The group will perform 4-5 concerts throughout the year including a tour of the local elementary schools and will play both classical and popular music. Physical Education                             Semester or Full Year

Students wear pedometers daily to track their MVPA (Moderate-Vigorous Physical Activity). At the end of class, students dock their pedometers into the computer to determine how much they moved during class. Students participate in a variety of physical activities and fitness testing to improve their fitness levels.

 

Pre-Engineering 1                              Semester

Are you creative or imaginative? Do you like to work with your hands? Imagine turning your creative design ideas into reality with the help of 3D printers, computers, and power tools. In this STEM course you will explore the engineering design process in order to design, draft, and build various projects. You will also develop trade skills in measurement, technical drawings, Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD), 3D modeling and printing, basic circuitry, and tool & machine safety.

 

Pre-Engineering 2                              Semester

Prerequisite: Pre-Engineering 1. In this STEM course you will apply your creativity and all the skills acquired from Pre-Engineering 1 in order to design and manufacture problem solving solutions for projects of your own choosing through an open-design concept.  This course comes fully equipped with 3D printers, a computer lab, and a machine shop. Students will employ problem solving skills, technical skills, teamwork, communication methods, engineering standards, global and human impacts, and critical thinking skills needed to solve problems in the real world.

 

Spanish 102                                         Full Year

This course is a continuation of Spanish 101 that prepares students for the transition to the next level in high school. Teacher signature and passing grade in 101 is required. Together Spanish 101 and 102 are equal to Spanish I.

 

Smart Fit Girls                                     Semester

This is a ladies only class. Students participate in cardio activities, weight lifting with and without weights. Students participate in units about body image, muscle identification, nutrition, etc..

 

Stagecraft                                           Semester two only

Stagecraft requires an active, creative student willing to work at a variety of tasks in a hands-on environment. Students will explore technical aspects of theater including lighting, sound, costumes, set design, and stage managing. Safety and responsibility are learned and are essential elements in this class. Students will design and build the set for the school musical.

 

Sources of Strength                           Full Year

This elective is designed to strengthen student’s leadership skills through their role as a positive Peer Leader in the school community and their understanding of healthy support systems.  It is intended for students interested in learning about public speaking, mentoring, teamwork and team building, organizing school-wide activities, as well as additional social emotional learning skills that will enhance their ability to achieve important life tasks in middle school, high school, and beyond. Application required.

 

Symphonic Band                                Full Year

 This class is for students who have 2-3 years experience playing their instrument and have advanced instrumental skills mastered. This class consists of mostly 8th grade students but accelerated 6th/7th grade students may be a part of this class as well. Symphonic Band members will perform 4-5 concerts during the school year including 1-2 festival concerts outside of school. If you are new to the area and wish to be in this class please contact Mr. Cavaliere before enrolling.

 

Student Council                                 Full Year

Student Council is a group of students committed to improving our school community by spreading school spirit and service. Responsible for organizing and leading activities throughout the year, members of this team are liaisons between the student body and other groups such as the Green Mountain community, PTA and administration. Application required.

 

Teacher Assistant                               Semester

This course provides students the opportunity to work in the various offices and departments throughout the school. Those selected will be individuals whose scholastic standing has been stable in middle school, whose personality is warm and friendly and whose ability to assume responsibility is well established. Application required.

 

Theater Arts                                         Semester

Theater Arts is a performance based class focusing on the basics of acting. The class is designed to help students express themselves and gain confidence while working on skills such as improvisation, characterization, and how to effectively audition and perform. Whether you have experience in theater or not, theater is a fun way to work on performing, public speaking, and memorization techniques.

 

Video Game Design                            Semester

Pre-requisite: Computer science or computer apps. The Video Game Design class will provide students with the opportunity to design, program, and create functional video games. The course builds on many of the main ideas from Computer Science class and will build on proficiencies that are essential to developing a video game. Knowledge and skills are developed through interactive software, text, pictures, animations, digital video. This class is highly interactive where students are assisted through the exciting world of video game design.

 

Visual Arts                                                        Semester

Art classes for the 8th grade provide students with two and three dimensional art experiences. A wide variety of media will be used to discover avenues for personal expression ranging in scope from drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking, jewelry, and beading to sculpture. Learn to create art that will make you feel proud and surprise those around you

 

Weightlifting                                                    Semester

Prerequisite-one semester of General PE and approval by Leeburg or Romero, 8th grade only. Students participate in weight lifting workouts and once a week cardio lessons. Students understand muscle structure, technique and nutrition guidance and how it affects their performance training
