Communication, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking skills are essential to thrive in the 21st century. Dunstan Middle School is committed to preparing students to thrive in a digital world. Having ongoing access to technology will allow our students to consistently apply 21st century skills, preparing them for high school and a variety of post-secondary options.

Benefits of BYOD Instruction

  • Gives students real world technology experience and application needed for high school, work experiences, and/or college.
  • Encourages creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking skills through assignments that are not possible without technology.
  • Allows teachers to differentiate lessons to meet students at various stages of learning.
  • Enables teachers to collect instant data on student learning and immediately adjust instruction accordingly.
  • Customizes learning through the use of a variety of technological tools.

Benefits of Purchasing a Chromebook from Dunstan

Instructional Advantage: Each device is pre-loaded with G-Suite for Education, and educational apps can be pushed out to all student devices. Students can create, organize, and share their work virtually.

Price Advantage: A one-time fee of $250.81 provides a durable, ready-to-use Chromebook at a discounted bulk rate. Students will be able to use their device in the evenings, over school breaks, and during the summer, making learning a year-round activity. And, they keep the device when they leave DMS. This is the same device used at Green Mountain, Columbine, and Chattfield. This device will function in any other Jeffco school. Warranty and repair are handled through the school.

Security Advantage: Device will be managed by Jeffco Tech Support for added security, and teachers can monitor screens during classroom activities to ensure maximum safety & engagement. The device automatically connects to the fastest wifi network. Student data is not collected by the district or by vendors (such as Google) as the student uses their Chromebook.

PLEASE NOTE: Most Chromebooks have a lifespan of about 4 years. Your student may need to purchase another device in high school.

Providing Your Own Device

To purchase a Chromebook through Dunstan:

Your student must bring a device to school every day that meets the following specifications:

  • wireless networking capability to access the District filtered network
  • color screen
  • external keyboard; an iPad without a keyboard is an unacceptable device
  • audio-out port and earbuds or headphones
  • device must be fully charged at the start of each school day and must have a minimum 4 hours of use from one battery charge
  • capability to run a fully functioning browser (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, etc)
  • ability to run an e-Book reader application
  • ability to play video file
  • recommended: processing RAM of 8GB (for Windows) or 4GB (for Chromebook), and memory of 64GB (for Windows) or 16GB (for Chromebook).

We encourage laptops (PC or Macintosh), iPads, tablets (with a minimum 7" screen), or Chromebooks. Unlike previous years, a cell phone will not qualify as a device that can be used for classroom instruction.

The following devices are strongly discouraged because of their difficulty of use with our instructional wireless network: Kindle, Nook, eReaders, Nintendo DS and/or PlayStation Portable PSP.

  • Teachers won't be able to enroll the device in the classroom management system (LanSchool), which ensures the safety and integrity of your student while online.
  • Teachers will do their best to troubleshoot issues with device.
  • Parents and students will need to sign additional contracts in order to allow device to be used on school wifi.
  • Educational apps cannot be automatically pushed out to the device.
  • No warranty is provided by the school.
